Looking for the best places for a beach holiday in Mozambique? See my recommendations below.
With its long Indian Ocean coastline, warm tropical waters and seemingly endless stretches of white sand, Mozambique is one of Southern Africa’s best beach destinations. While everyone else is fighting for a sunbed in the Maldives or Zanzibar, Mozambique's 2,500 kilometers of Indian Ocean coastline sit there quietly being some of the most beautiful, least crowded beach real estate in Africa. If you want turquoise water, dhow sails on the horizon, and barely another footprint in the sand, this is where you go.

Vilanculos (Tom Corser (Wikimedia Commons))
Vilanculos is one of the easiest places to start a Mozambique beach holiday. This laid-back coastal town is the gateway to the spectacular Bazaruto Archipelago and has a beautiful, palm-fringed beach of its own.
The sheltered bay means the water is generally calmer than at some of Mozambique’s more exposed beaches, making it particularly appealing to families. You can spend your days swimming, kayaking and relaxing on the sand, or take a traditional dhow cruise into the sunset.
The real attraction, however, is what lies offshore. Boat trips from Vilanculos take you to the islands, sandbanks and reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Bazaruto Archipelago
For the ultimate tropical beach escape, it is hard to beat the Bazaruto Archipelago. The protected archipelago is famous for dazzling white beaches, towering sand dunes, turquoise water and exceptional marine life.
The islands include Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue, with luxury lodges offering a secluded island experience. Activities include snorkelling, diving, fishing, dhow cruises and marine safaris. The surrounding waters are home to dolphins, turtles, manta rays and dugongs.

Tofo (Erik Cleves Kristensen by Wikimedia Commons)
If you want your beach holiday to include plenty of adventure, head to Tofo. This relaxed beach town in Inhambane Province combines golden sand with a lively, informal atmosphere.
Tofo is particularly famous for its marine life and attracts divers and snorkellers hoping to encounter whale sharks, manta rays and other spectacular ocean creatures. It is also popular for surfing and has plenty of beachfront restaurants and accommodation. Mozambique's tourism authority describes Tofo as a destination particularly suited to surfers, divers and beach lovers.

Just north of Tofo, Barra Beach offers a quieter alternative. Its wide sandy beach, coconut palms and relaxed atmosphere make it ideal if you want to spend your holiday doing very little beyond swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the ocean.
It is also a good choice for families and for combining a beach stay with a visit to historic Inhambane.

Located close to the South African border, Ponta do Ouro is one of the most convenient Mozambique beach destinations for South Africans travelling by road. It has beautiful sandy beaches, a laid-back atmosphere and excellent opportunities for diving, snorkelling, surfing and marine encounters. The surrounding marine reserve is home to dolphins, whales, turtles and whale sharks. Its accessibility also makes it a popular choice for a shorter getaway rather than a longer island holiday.

Pomene (hermansmit - Wikimedia Commons)
Pomene is one of Mozambique’s quieter beach destinations, located on a remote stretch of coastline between Vilanculos and Inhambane. It is centred around Pomene Bay, where mangrove-fringed waterways meet the Indian Ocean, creating a beautiful setting for a peaceful tropical escape.
The area is particularly appealing if you want to get away from the crowds. Think long stretches of sandy beach, warm turquoise water, coconut palms and plenty of space to simply switch off. There are opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, diving, fishing, kayaking and boat trips, while the surrounding estuary and mangroves add another dimension to the landscape. Pomene is also known for its spectacular sunsets and excellent opportunities for dolphin and whale sightings at certain times of year.

Ilha de Moçambique (Mozambique Island) By David Stanley - Wikimedia Commons
This one's different from the rest because it's not really about the beach — it's a UNESCO World Heritage island packed with Swahili-Arab and Portuguese colonial architecture, narrow streets, and centuries of trading history. The beaches nearby are decent rather than spectacular, but I'd still build a couple of days around it if you're already in the north, purely because there's nowhere else on this coastline quite like it culturally.
For luxury and picture-perfect beaches, choose the Bazaruto Archipelago. For families and easy island excursions, Vilanculos is an excellent base. If marine life and diving are your priority, head to Tofo, while Barra is perfect for a more peaceful break. And if you're looking for a beach holiday that is relatively easy to reach from South Africa, Ponta do Ouro is a suitable option. For travellers who prefer secluded beaches and intimate resorts over busy tourist hubs, Pomene is a great choice.
