Are you planning to go on a holiday soon? Whether you’ll be jetting off to a faraway destination or going on a road trip along South Africa’s beautiful routes, it is important to stay prepared for anything that may come your way in your travels. To make sure nothing spoils your holiday, we’ve put together a packing guide to ensure that you don’t forget these essential travel items.
If you’re packing for an international trip your passport should be the very first thing on your list of items to pack as you can’t afford to travel without it. Ensure that you have all the other travel documents you need as you may be sent back home without them.
A well-designed travel backpack or carry-on bag is one of the most important items you’ll bring with you. Look for something lightweight, durable, and easy to organise. Multiple compartments make it easier to access essentials like passports, electronics, and snacks without rummaging through everything.
A good travel bag should also be comfortable to carry for long periods, especially if your journey involves airports, train stations, or city walks.
Tip: Choose a bag that fits airline carry-on regulations so you can avoid checking luggage when possible.
Phones have become essential travel tools. From maps and bookings to photos and translation apps, we rely heavily on them while travelling.
A portable power bank ensures your phone never runs out of battery during a long sightseeing day or a delayed flight. Choose one with enough capacity to charge your phone at least two or three times.
This small device can save you from being stranded without navigation, transport apps, or contact information.
Different countries use different plug types and voltages. A universal travel adapter allows you to charge your devices almost anywhere in the world without carrying multiple adapters.
Many modern adapters include USB ports, allowing you to charge several devices at once — perfect for travellers carrying phones, cameras, tablets, and laptops.
Packing cubes are a game changer for organised travellers. These lightweight fabric organisers help separate clothing, toiletries, and accessories inside your suitcase.
Not only do they save space, but they also make it easy to find items quickly without unpacking everything.
They’re particularly helpful for longer trips or multi-destination holidays.
Packing in a small first aid kit is essential for your holiday travels as anything can happen to you during your vacation. While you’d obviously need to see a doctor or rush to the hospital if anything significant happened to you - for minor things like bites, a runny nose or headaches, having painkillers, bandages, antiseptic wipes and other over-the-counter medicine ready in your first aid kit means your trip won’t be interrupted by a stop at the pharmacy.
While hand sanitiser may seem insignificant, it can be a lifesaver when you find yourself in a situation where you have no access to water and soap. According to SmarterTravel, “when it comes to warding off the dreaded airplane cold, your first line of defence is to sanitise everything. Having sanitiser handy can make all the difference between enjoying your trip and spending your precious travel time recovering from a cold”.
Should you be travelling with a little one, remember to pack in an extra set of clothes for the journey, as well as nappies, wet wipes, snacks, and toys to keep your baby entertained. Also, make sure you have enough baby food for the journey.
Taking your own refillable water bottle can save you money, especially if you’re going on a road trip. You also don’t want to leave your sunglasses behind if you’re travelling somewhere hot. And last but not least, an absolute essential is car insurance (if you’ll be driving to your holiday destination). With the high number of accidents on South African roads, you never know when you might be involved in one - so be smart and avoid being caught out when you need car insurance most.
There are several other important things that can go into your suitcase, but the ones we have mentioned can really be lifesavers and ensure that nothing spoils your holiday trip.
