About Me and My Blog

About this blog

In Africa and Beyond is a blog about travel, events and experiences in Africa, and the rest of the world - specializing in couples travel and family travel - and often with a luxury focus.

About the blogger – Sara Essop

I am a South African travel blogger and freelance writer, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a child, I often got lost in the pages of Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree series. I would excitedly discover and explore new and strange lands at the top of the Faraway Tree with the children in the book. Now, as an adult, I still love discovering and exploring exciting places around the world, albeit using more conventional travel methods.

I am passionate about travel and am prone to catching the travel bug every so often. Taking the road less traveled or hopping on a plan to somewhere usually helps when this happens. I am also a self-confessed safari addict and the bush is my happy place. I would live there if I could.

I have been to 50 countries in five continents thus far, and am always eager to add more to the count. Australia and Antarctica remain on my bucket list and new opportunities and excuses to travel are always welcomed. My favourite international cities are Istanbul and Venice.

I have been traveling from the time I was a little girl. and long before I started blogging, so unfortunately I don’t have write-ups on all the places I’ve visited although I do have photos and memories of most.

My husband shares my love of travel and we have two children who have traveled extensively with us.

I have been published in the Sunday Times, Travel Ideas magazine, SAA Sawubona Magazine, Diversions magazine, The Times newspaper, South Africa magazine and Reader's Digest amongst others. I have also written for several prominent websites including A Luxury Travel Blog, All4Women,  Huffington Post, Getaway Magazine Blog, News24.com and Women24.com.

I have a Diploma in Blogging and Content Marketing, and a Diploma in Social Marketing, both passed with distinction. This is in addition to an Honours degree in Commerce. I am also a Certified South Africa Specialist and a certified SEO writer.
