I created the “Tell me about your holidays” section earlier this year to give my readers and other travelers an opportunity to talk about their travels. Today I would like to introduce you to Samira, a lifestyle blogger based in the United States. She blogs at The Muslimah Guide .
My name is Samira, I was born in Somalia, raised in Holland, grew up in England and currently live in the United States. I am a mother of two little munchkins, a Muslimah entrepreneur and a blogger at The Muslimah Guide .
The earliest travel memory I have was visiting Kenya when I was around 5 years old.
Washington, DC
Since Washington, DC is the hub for American politics and history we walked around the National Mall, visited the memorial parks, monuments and of course the White House.
While going for the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia was purely a spiritual journey, we did end up staying there for a month to squeeze in some down time. Saudi Arabia is a beautiful country with a rich Islamic history, experiencing and walking the same ‘streets’ as the Prophet (PBUH) did in Makkah and Madinah was truly amazing. However there are many other things one can do in Saudi Arabia, like shopping in Jeddah and camel riding in the dessert ;).
My favourite place has to be Jerusalem. As a person who loves Islamic history, visiting Palestine was one of the highlights of my life. This was not a visit that was planned, as there are some conflicts in the area and we were advised not to go. However when you’re on a holiday in Jordan it just seems silly not to cross the border and visit Palestine. Which is exactly what my husband and I did. The opportunity was there and we seized it.
Walk around in the Old City - it’s a surreal place that has a Jewish, Christian and Muslim quarters. Visit Masjid Aqsa as well as the Dome of the Rock. And for the best views of Jerusalem, Mount Olive is a must.
Meet the locals, and every once in a while start a conversation with them. I always find that it is the people that enrich my travels more than the sights do.
