Planning a trip to Johannesburg's oldest expo? See the best things to do at the Rand Show.
The Rand Show has been a part of Johannesburg ever since I can remember. My earliest memory of the show is when I was around 6 years old. I went with my aunt and I was so excited when she bought me a helium balloon. But I didn’t hold it tightly enough and it soared upwards. I watched it fly higher and higher into the sky, tearfully, until I couldn’t see it anymore.
The Rand Show is celebrating its 125th year in 2019! It is only eight years younger than Johannesburg, which was founded in 1886. In the early years though, it was more of an agricultural show. Now, it is known for its entertainment, exhibitions and shopping.
You can win some great prizes at the Rand Show this year . Buy your tickets online and you can win a Suzuki Swift. At the show, you can win a trip to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, a trip to TwitchCon North America, a trip to Lesotho, a home makeover and much more. For a competition junkie like me, this is big!
This recent introduction to the Rand Show has been specifically introduced to attract the younger generation to the show, although the young at heart are also welcomed, of course. I know that my teenage son was most excited about this section. Highlights include a Fortnite tournament and a sneak peak at Mortal Kombat 11 before it launches.
Kids love amusement parks and so do many adults. Scream your lungs out on the high speed roller coasters, or enjoy the leisurely rides on the Ferris wheels and carousels. There are many rides and activities for the smaller kids too.
Adrenalin junkies will love this area with its zip-lining, abseiling, rock climbing and bungee trampolines.
The South African National Defence Force will be putting on some great displays including mock rescue missions, air displays, parades and marches. You can also get close up to the armored vehicles on display to take your selfie.
Looking for ideas on how to decorate your home? Get inspired by global trends in home and garden design by the huge displays here. There is a replica of the SANBI 2019 Chelsea Flower show entry too.
Watch teams of budding chefs show off their culinary skills in live cook-offs, while being entertained by Jacaranda FM presenters.
Watch the talented performers from the Zip-Zap Circus in action. They will be hosting performances on the last three days of the show.
The World of Motoring features interactive motor and sound displays, a driving course where you can test your driving skills, a sound competition and go-karting.
The “museum” section in Hall 6 displays highlights from the past 125 years, including images, videos and prestigious awards.
With everything from coffee and clothes, to furniture and art on sale, you can indulge in all the retail therapy you need.
There are a myriad of food and snack options at the Food Hall and at the outdoor stalls.
The Kalahari Scientist has daily science shows which will show you just how exciting science can be. Think chemical reactions and explosions.
