9 Things to Know Before You Go on a Cruise

Are you planning an ocean holiday? Here are a few things you need to know before you go on a cruise ...

Cruising is one of my favourite ways to travel. It is often more convenient and more pocket-friendly than conventional holidays, with your food, transport and entertainment taken care of, the thrill of waking up in a new destination every day and the need to unpack only once.

I have been on 4 cruises thus far—with Royal Caribbean, MSC and most recently with Norwegian Cruise Line—and there are several important things to consider to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience.

9 Things to Know Before You Go on a Cruise

1.Research Your Cruise Line and Ship

Before booking a cruise, take the time to research different cruise lines and ships to find one that best suits your preferences and budget. Consider factors such as the ship's size, onboard amenities, dining options, entertainment offerings, and itinerary. Reading reviews from past passengers can also provide valuable insights into the overall experience. Join cruise groups on social media and online platforms like TripAdvisor to learn more about different cruise lines and ships.

2. Pack Wisely

Packing for a cruise requires careful consideration of both onboard activities and port excursions. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing for various occasions, including formal nights, casual dinners, and outdoor activities. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, medications, and travel documents (including your passport and visas if you are travelling to international ports).

Most cruise lines have dress codes for certain restaurants and evening events, so it's essential to pack accordingly. However, do remember that cabin space can be tight so find a balance.

3. Understand the Costs

While the upfront cost of a cruise may seem reasonable, it's essential to consider additional expenses that can quickly add up. Budget for flights (if necessary) as well as onboard expenses such as gratuities, specialty dining, beverages, laundry, shore excursions and spa treatments. Be mindful of hidden fees and charges to avoid any surprises when settling your final bill at the end of the cruise.

4. Stay Healthy

Cruise ships are enclosed environments with a large number of passengers in close proximity. To stay healthy during your cruise, practice good hygiene habits such as frequent handwashing and using hand sanitizer. Be mindful of outbreaks of illnesses like norovirus and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others onboard.

5. Familiarize Yourself with Safety Procedures

Safety is a top priority on cruise ships, and all passengers are required to participate in a mandatory safety drill before the ship sets sail. Pay attention during the drill and familiarize yourself with emergency procedures, including the location of life jackets and emergency exits. It's essential to take safety precautions seriously to ensure a safe voyage for everyone onboard.

6. Manage Seasickness

Seasickness can affect many passengers, especially during rough seas or inclement weather. If you're prone to motion sickness, consider taking preventive measures such as medication or wearing acupressure wristbands. Choose a cabin located in the middle of the ship and on a lower deck, where motion is less noticeable. Cruise ships usually have seasickness tablets available at the Guest Services counter too.

7. Port Excursions

Port excursions offer the opportunity to explore new destinations. Many cruise lines offer a variety of excursions that can be booked directly through them, providing convenience and peace of mind with organized tours and transportation. Alternatively, one can book excursions independently, allowing for more flexibility, personalization and cost savings.

If you book your port excursion yourself, it's essential to ensure that you return to the ship on time. Cruise ships operate on strict schedules, and failure to board before the designated departure time can result in being left behind. To avoid missing the ship's departure, plan your excursions wisely, factor in travel time, and always carry the ship's contact information in case of any unforeseen delays.

8. Disconnect and Unwind

While most cruise ships offer onboard Wi-Fi and cellular service, this usually comes at an extra cost and it may not be very efficient. Therefore, you may want to consider taking a break from technology to disconnect and fully immersing yourself in the cruise experience. Use this opportunity to relax, unwind, and enjoy quality time with your travel companions without external distractions.

9. Respect the Environment

Cruise ships visit various destinations around the world, and it's crucial to respect the local environment and communities you encounter. Follow eco-friendly practices such as avoiding single-use plastics, disposing of waste properly, and supporting local businesses when exploring port cities. Don’t ever throw anything into the ocean.

  1. As an avid cruiser with many under my belt those are great talking points and things to know about cruising. I just hate it when people book a cruise and hate it bc they didn't do the research ahead of time. I understand some people will never be cruisers, but some give up bc they just were not prepared for their first cruise.

  2. This is a good list of things to consider before taking a cruise. Picking the right ship and cruise line will make a big difference. And there are so many options to choose from these days! The hidden fees can be a big surprise if you are not aware. Luckily we don’t suffer badly from seasickness but we always pack prepared in case we get really bad seas and want some extra protection. The one we have the most challenge with is unconnecting and accepting the ship WiFi limitations.

  3. I've been on a few cruises now and agree with all your great tips. Knowing what to do in an emergency is important. On one of my cruises our ship was outrunning a cyclone in Tahiti, unfortunately we didn't get into port in time and spent 36 hours wallowing on the leeward side of the island riding out the cyclone - apparently the safest place at the time. So knowing emergency procedures is very important as you don't know what might happen.

  4. These are all good tips. Definitely pay attention to your shore excursion times. I have seen people left behind because they haven't made it back to the ship on time.
