Meet Suzie from “I Am But Wandering”

I created the “Travellers’ Tales” section to give other travellers an opportunity to talk about their travels. Today I would like to introduce you to Suzie , a travel blogger based in New Zealand. She blogs at “I Am But Wandering”.

I would love to hear about your travels too. Go to “Travellers’ Tales, fill in the quick questionnaire and email it to me with your blog links.

Read about Suzie’s travels here,

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Suzie , a Brit currently in New Zealand. I left my teaching job in August 2016 in order to travel full time with my husband. We hope to travel for at least the next 5 years across at least 5 continents before thinking about heading back to the UK.

2. What is your earliest travel memory?

I think my earliest travel memory is from a holiday when I was around 4 years old; I say think because I don't know if I have made the memory out of stories and pictures or if it is at least partially mine! I was on holiday with my parents at a resort somewhere in Tenerife, there was a fancy dress competition, and my parents and their friends dressed me up as a tiny (female) Crocodile Dundee, complete with 6 ft inflatable crocodile.

3. Where was your last holiday?

Since we travel full time now, it is hard to say what is ‘holiday’ and what is simply ‘life’ for us. I suppose the last bit that we spent time just being a typical tourist was when we arrived in New Zealand. A friend of ours came over from the UK and we travelled around both the North and South Islands with him for 5 weeks. Since then, we have moved to NZ, so it is a bit of an unusual holiday.Suzie Sara Essop

4. What was the best thing you did there?

There is so much to do in New Zealand, I think the most incredible thing for me was skydiving. It really does feel like you could be flying. Another of my favourite things is to find dark sky zones (there are so many) and just stare at the sky all night. The stars out here are unreal, it is like a painting. One day I will learn how to take photos of starry skies, but until then, I’ll just keep looking up.

5. What was your best holiday ever? Why?

I absolutely loved our trip on the Trans-Siberian. In total, we travelled from London to Hong Kong by trains, encompassing a section of the Trans-Siberian route. I have always wanted to travel this railway and it did not disappoint.

6. What is your favourite travel destination?

Norway! We travelled the entire coast line of Norway by campervan in 2016 and it is spectacular. Beautiful landscapes, incredible history and a chance to see the Northern Lights: what isn’t to love?

7. What must one do there?

Hiking is a must in Norway, there are lots of famous treks, such as Preikestolen and Trolltunga, as well as less well-known ones almost everywhere.

8. Who is your favourite travel companion/s?

My husband is the best travel companion. We have a very similar travel style and know how to get the best out of each other for every destination and experience.

9. Name one item you must have when travelling.

Good shoes that are practical for the climate you are in, and a pair of flip flops for hostel showers.Suzie Sara Essop Wandering

10. Your best travel advice?

Travel slow, quality over quantity is always my philosophy. But I have a lot of time to play with, this is a real luxury!

11. The one place you want to visit before you die?

A bit of a cliché, but I would love to trek to Machu Picchu, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of travelling to Peru since I was about 8 years old, and for some unknown reason I’ve never even made it to South America, let alone Machu Picchu. But one day!

12. How can people connect with you?
