The Zoo Trot at Johannesburg Zoo

The Zoo Trot at Johannesburg Zoo

Although I've been to the Johannesburg Zoo many times before, this was the first time I went for the Zoo Trot . It started at 7h30 which was a bit of a schlep as I had to wake up really early on the only day of the week that I can sleep in. Parking was also a bit of a problem with many people having to park quite a distance away. But by the time we left the zoo at 13h00, I was amazed at how much we had accomplished by starting early. The Zoo Trot was a great way to get a workout in pleasant surroundings. The pre-determined route took us past the zoo’s most popular animals.

About the Johannesburg Zoo

The Johannesburg Zoo is a world-renowned zoological park situated in the bustling city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Established in 1904, the zoo has a rich history and is one of the oldest and largest zoos on the African continent. The zoo spans over an area of 55 hectares and is home to over 320 species of animals, including lions, tigers, elephants, gorillas, zebras, and a variety of birds, reptiles, and other exotic animals. The zoo's animal enclosures are designed to mimic the natural habitats of the animals, ensuring that they are kept in an environment that is as close to their natural habitat as possible.

In addition to the animals, the Johannesburg Zoo also boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, picnic areas, and walking trails, making it a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts. The zoo also offers educational programs and interactive experiences, allowing visitors to learn about animal conservation and the importance of protecting wildlife.

About the Zoo Trot

The Zoo Trot is a monthly fun run (or walk) around the Johannesburg Zoo. It is a family-oriented event that is open to everyone. Participants can choose to do a serious early morning 10km run to beat their personal best or simply take a leisurely 5km stroll around with their kids. The event usually takes place on the second Sunday of every month.

Registration for the event opens at 06:30, and the Trot starts at 07:30. Payments for the event are made during registration. It's a great opportunity for kids, families, colleagues, or friends to participate in a wholesome outdoor activity together.

The Zoo Trot event often has exciting activities to enhance the experience for attendees. These include face painters, a mime artist, stilt walkers, vibrant music, and a coffee station.

It was an enjoyable day and the sore legs were a small price to pay. We may be returning soon again as the Temple of the Ancients exhibit will be opening shortly. It will be housing "mysterious and colourful species of the Amazon". Sounds intriguing...
