Although I've been to the Johannesburg Zoo many times before, this was the first time I went for the Zoo Trot . It started at 7h30 which was a bit of a schlep as I had to wake up really early on the only day of the week that I can sleep in. Parking was also a bit of a problem with many people having to park quite a distance away. But by the time we left the zoo at 13h00, I was amazed at how much we had accomplished by starting early. The Zoo Trot was a great way to get a workout in pleasant surroundings. The pre-determined route took us past the zoo’s most popular animals.
You get to walk in beautiful surroundings like this...
and see the zebras...
the rhinos...
the lion basking in the sunshine...
the tiger enjoying the shade...
and the chimpanzees enjoying some family time (Spot the cute baby?)...
The flamingos were getting hydrated...
and the polar bears were waiting for lunch...(the dirty one is the male - go figure!)
The lunch just arrived - biscuits, fruits and fish in an ice block...
After all the walking, the kids were tired. They had an option to take the zoo ferry for R5...
or drive their own cars...
or maybe just play in the play area...
It was an enjoyable day and the sore legs were a small price to pay. We may be returning soon again as the Temple of the Ancients exhibit will be opening shortly. It will be housing "mysterious and colourful species of the Amazon". Sounds intriguing...
